WHAT NEWTON FAMILIES NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STAIRLIFTS AND WHEELCHAIR RAMPS
Written by Paul C. Bastante, CAPS, BDM, for Jersey Stairlifts And Ramps and brought to you by The Agewise Institute.
Newton doesn't look like the rest of North Jersey, and it isn't trying to.

As the county seat of Sussex County, it's one of the oldest towns in this part of the state, built around a courthouse and a town green that have been sitting at the same intersection since before the Revolutionary War.
That history is easy to see if you spend any time downtown. The Sussex County Courthouse at High and Spring Streets traces back to 1765, when landowner Jonathan Hampton donated the land specifically so the building would face a public square instead of sitting off on its own. The original courthouse burned in 1847, was rebuilt the following year in the Greek Revival style still standing today, and now sits on the National Register of Historic Places.
Right across from it, Newton Green holds a 90-ton granite Civil War monument to Sussex County's soldiers and sailors, erected in 1895. A short walk down Main Street, the Hill Memorial Museum, home of the Sussex County Historical Society, has operated continuously since 1916, making it the oldest building of its kind still running as a museum anywhere in New Jersey.
What all of that history left behind, beyond the landmarks, is a town full of genuinely old housing stock.
Victorian homes, historic colonials, cape cods, and rural properties scattered across streets like Spring Street, High Street, and Sparta Avenue, many of them built long before anyone was thinking about accessibility. That's a different kind of challenge than a modern development, and it's one we deal with constantly.
That's where we come in.
Jersey Stairlifts And Ramps installs stairlifts and wheelchair ramps for families throughout Newton and Sussex County. We know what a staircase in a hundred-year-old Victorian looks like compared to one in a cape cod near Union Place, and we know that the two rarely call for the same solution.
WHY NEWTON HOMES ARE DIFFERENT
A house built around Newton's town square in the 1800s was never designed with a stairlift in mind. Victorian staircases in particular tend to run narrower, with tighter turns and landings that a modern straight rail simply won't fit.
Cape cods, common throughout Newton's residential streets, often have steep, compact stairways leading to a second floor that was originally meant for storage, not daily living. Rural properties outside the downtown core bring their own issue: elevated entries and long front steps that turn into a genuine hazard the moment mobility becomes an issue.
We've worked in all of it. A straight stairlift is usually the right call for a simpler cape cod layout, often installed in a matter of hours. A Victorian or historic colonial with a curved or multi-landing staircase needs a custom curved unit, measured and built to that one specific staircase. There's no one-size-fits-all answer here, which is why every job starts with a free in-home evaluation instead of a guess.
LANDMARKS WE KNOW WELL
Working across Newton means our team is in and around its history on a regular basis, not just the neighborhoods surrounding it.

We service homes near Newton Green and the Sussex County Courthouse, the heart of the town since 1765 and still the anchor of downtown Newton today. We're familiar with the streets around the Hill Memorial Museum on Main Street, and the historic district that surrounds it. We work throughout the neighborhoods along Spring Street, Newton's pedestrian downtown corridor, and out toward High Street and Sparta Avenue.
Families near these landmarks call us for the same reason families further out toward Union Place and Halsted Street do. A staircase that was fine for decades can turn into a real problem overnight, no matter how close or far you live from the courthouse.
THE MOMENT MOST FAMILIES CALL US
It's rarely something anyone plans for. Usually it's a discharge home after a hip or knee surgery, and a family realizes the staircase in their Newton home, the one nobody thought twice about for thirty years, has suddenly become the biggest obstacle in the house. Sometimes it's an aging parent who's had a few too many close calls near the top step. Sometimes it's someone using a wheelchair or walker who can no longer manage the elevated entry that's common on so many of Newton's older homes.
Whatever brings the call, our approach stays the same. We come to your home, look at the actual staircase or entryway you're dealing with, and recommend the solution that fits it. Not the most expensive option. The right one.
WHAT WE OFFER NEWTON FAMILIES
We install straight stairlifts, curved stairlifts custom built for Newton's older and more architecturally varied homes, and outdoor stairlifts designed to handle Northwest New Jersey winters. We also install modular, ADA-compliant wheelchair ramps for step-free access to any home. When the need is temporary, whether it's post-surgery recovery or a visiting relative, we offer rental options on both stairlifts and ramps so no family has to commit to something permanent they don't actually need.
Every job comes from a licensed, bonded, and insured local contractor. NJ License #13VH09377200. We're not a call center dispatching a random technician. We're a North Jersey company that shows up, explains the options in plain language, and never pressures anyone into a decision.

We work throughout Downtown Newton, the Spring Street corridor, Ryerson Avenue, Moran Street, High Street, Newton Town Center, Halsted Street, Sparta Avenue, Mill Street, and the Union Place area, covering the 07860-zip code.
