This is what Paramus, N.J. families need to know about stairlifts and wheelchair ramps

Ask anyone who grew up in Bergen County what comes to mind when you say “Paramus,” and you’ll get the same answer almost every time. The malls. Garden State Plaza, Paramus Park, the Fashion Center, Bergen Town Center. Four major shopping centers sitting inside one borough, all built off the same stretch of Route 4, Route 17, and the Garden State Parkway. It’s a lot of retail for a town of this size, and there’s a reason for it.

Before the malls, Paramus was farmland. The name itself comes from the Lenape word “Peremessing,” which described an area thick with wild turkey. You can still see a nod to that history if you know where to look. There’s a large metal turkey statue inside Paramus Park mall, a quiet piece of local trivia sitting in the middle of one of the busiest shopping corridors in the state. Farmers held onto that land right up until the 1950s, when developers realized New Jersey had no sales tax and New York did. That single fact turned Paramus into, as locals still call it, the first stop outside New York City for shopping.

What that history left behind, though, isn’t just the malls. It’s the housing that grew up around them. The post-war boom that built Garden State Plaza in 1957 also built thousands of split-level homes, raised ranches, and colonials across Paramus’s residential streets, all packed with stairs. Split-levels in particular are famous for awkward staircases with mid-level landings and turns, which is a very different animal than a single straight run in a colonial.

That’s where we come in.

Jersey Stairlifts And Ramps installs stairlifts and wheelchair ramps for families throughout Paramus and Bergen County. We know the housing stock here because we’ve worked in it for years. We know which staircases need a straight stairlift and which ones need a custom curved unit built for a split-level landing. And we know that when a parent or grandparent starts struggling on the stairs, the last thing a family needs is more confusion.

WHY PARAMUS HOMES ARE DIFFERENT

Paramus is sometimes called the Crossroads of Bergen County, and it earns the name. Route 4, Route 17, and the Garden State Parkway all cross through it, which made it perfect for retail development and terrible for a master plan.

The borough didn’t adopt one until 1969, well after most of the neighborhoods you see today were already built. That’s part of why Paramus has such a mix of home styles packed close together. Drive from the East Paramus side near Spring Valley Road over toward the Farview Avenue area, and you’ll pass raised ranches, split-levels, and mid-century colonials block by block.

Each of those styles handles a stairlift differently.

A straight run in a colonial is often the fastest and most affordable install we do, sometimes finished in a few hours. A split-level with a turn or a mid-flight landing needs a curved stairlift, custom measured and built to that exact staircase. There’s no universal fit here, which is exactly why we start every job with a free in-home evaluation instead of guessing over the phone.

LANDMARKS WE KNOW WELL

Working across Paramus means we’re in and around its landmarks constantly, not just the neighborhoods behind them.

We service homes near Westfield Garden State Plaza at the intersection of Routes 4 and 17, one of the largest malls in the country and still the anchor of the borough’s identity. We’re familiar with the streets around Paramus Park, home to that turkey statue and a reminder of the borough’s farming roots.

We work throughout the area near Bergen Town Center on Route 4, and the neighborhoods surrounding the Fashion Center. Families near Saddle River County Park, a favorite for walking and biking among Paramus residents, call us for the same reason families near Ridgewood Country Club do. Getting older doesn’t care what zip code you’re in or what’s down the road. It shows up the same way everywhere: a staircase that used to be nothing suddenly becomes the hardest part of the day.

THE MOMENT MOST FAMILIES CALL US

It’s rarely a planned decision. Usually it’s a hospital discharge after a hip or knee surgery, and a family realizes the stairs their loved one climbed every day for thirty years are suddenly a real risk. Sometimes it’s an aging parent who’s had one too many close calls near the top step. Sometimes it’s someone using a wheelchair or walker who simply can’t get in and out of their own front door anymore.

Whatever the reason, our approach doesn’t change. We come to your Paramus home, look at your actual staircase or entryway, and recommend the right solution. Not the most expensive one. The right one. If that’s a straight stairlift, we say so. If it’s a rental because the need is temporary, we say that too.

WHAT WE OFFER PARAMUS FAMILIES

We install straight stairlifts, curved stairlifts custom fit for split-level and multi-landing staircases, and outdoor stairlifts built to handle Bergen County winters. We also install modular, ADA-compliant wheelchair ramps for anyone who needs step-free access to their home. If the need is short-term, whether it’s post-surgery recovery or a visiting family member, we offer rental options on both stairlifts and ramps, so nobody has to commit to a permanent installation they don’t need.

Every job comes from a licensed, bonded, and insured local contractor. NJ License #13VH09377200. We’re not a national call center. We’re a North Jersey company that shows up, explains things clearly, and doesn’t pressure anyone into a decision.

SERVING ALL OF PARAMUS AND BEYOND

We work throughout East Paramus, West Paramus, Paramus Center, and the neighborhoods along Spring Valley Road, Farview Avenue, Paramus Road, Century Road, Midland Avenue, and Oradell Avenue, covering both the 07652 and 07653 zip codes. We also serve the surrounding towns families ask about most, including Hackensack, Ridgewood, Fair Lawn, Teaneck, Saddle Brook, Rochelle Park, Emerson, and Westwood.
